Logistics UK joins industry leaders in hosting local MP

SEGRO, Amazon and Maritime completed the line up in welcoming North West Leicestershire MP Amanda Hack to East Midlands Gateway.

On Friday 28 February, MP Amanda Hack toured one of Amazon’s Fulfilment Centres and the Maritime rail freight terminal and received a briefing from Logistics UK and SEGRO on the sector as a whole as well as on SEGRO’s logistics sites in the UK, including East Midlands Gateway.

With 27% of the total workforce in North West Leicestershire employed in logistics companies and the constituency being situated at the heart of the UK Logistics Network, the hosts briefed Amanda Hack about the value of the sector to the local and national economy, and how it breaks down barriers to opportunity.

The tour included seeing how logistics is innovating and using new technologies to improve efficiency, upgrading driver facilities to address skills shortages in the sector and looking to decarbonise as part of net zero ambitions. Discussions also covered wider infrastructure needs, including the challenges around securing power to handle rising demands as the sector electrifies and the role of local education providers in delivering the necessary training to equip the next generation of workers.

News In Brief

DP World breaks 100,000 barrier

DP World has recorded the 100,000th container moved by rail from its Southampton logistics hub, as part of its  carbon emission reducing Modal Shift Programme trial.

The share of rail freight for onward journeys by containers arriving by sea at DP World Southampton has risen from 21 per cent at the start of the programme to more than 30 per cent today, it revealed.

The increase means 100,000 more containers have started their onward journey by rail than without the incentive.

DP World said the Modal Shift Programme had removed more than 25,000 tonnes of CO2e from supply chains, cutting road congestion by shifting approximately 8mn road miles to rail freight.

The supply chain solutions specialist now aims to further increase the share of rail freight towards 40 per cent in 2026.
