Logistics UK calls for West Midlands Futures to recognise the importance of the logistics sector

The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) is consulting on its West Midlands Futures Green Paper until 8 June. Its purpose is to outline a strategic vision which plans to improve the region’s economy, transport, housing, and digital infrastructure by 2035.

It aims to align regional development with national policies, such as the English Devolution White Paper and the Planning and Infrastructure Bill.

Logistics UK submitted its response on 23 May with our key message being that the WMCA should recognise logistics as a foundational sector. We are also calling for the appointment of a dedicated logistics lead to embed the sector across regional strategy.

News In Brief

BA to increase cargo operations with India following free trade deal

British Airways, which has been flying to India for more than 100 years, will look to take advantage of future cargo opportunities following the India-UK free trade agreement, the airline's Chairman and CEO, Sean Doyle has said.

Currently, the airline operates 56 flights a week from five Indian cities, including three-weekly flights from Mumbai and double daily services from Delhi. It also has a daily flight from Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

The airline is bullish about the cargo opportunities between India and the UK, especially in the wake of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries, and expects to transport more cargo.

"I expect more cargo being exported from India under the FTA," said Doyle. "I would also expect that it would be an increase in certain niche exports coming into India as well. Not necessarily out of the UK but also out of the surrounding kind of markets that we serve," he said.
