New LCV 2022 registrations down to lowest levels since 2013

According to figures released today (5 January 2022) by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), 282,139 light commercial vehicles (LCV) were registered in 2022, the lowest annual figure since 2013 (271,073).

2022’s LCV registrations are in sharp contrast to 2021 when a strong post-pandemic market saw 355,380 vehicles registered. The decline equates to a fall of over a fifth (20.6%) with the SMMT citing persistent supply chain issues resulting in limited model availability, despite strong order books for new vans throughout last year.

All categories of LCVs saw year-on-year drops in registrations, with the 2.0 to 2.5 tonnes sector showing the largest decrease of almost a third (31.0%).

However, the demand for battery electric vans (BEVs) continued to grow, with 16,744 units registered; an annual increase of 31.2%. While the uptake of battery electric vans still lags behind the new electric car market, new electric van registrations now account for 5.9% of all vans registered in the UK in 2022, up from 3.6% in 2021.
