Discover Logistics Careers campaign gets off to a flying start

Logistics UK’s Discover Logistics Careers campaign got off to a strong start last weekend (29-31 October 2021), the business group has said, with a repeat event already being planned for next year.

A broad range of Logistics UK members, including household names such as John Lewis Partnership, Aldi and Wincanton, held more than 25 open events as part of the campaign.

In the face of acute skills shortages, members were keen to seize the opportunity to use the campaign to open their doors to potential applicants and showcase both their logistics operations and the range of roles available.

The campaign achieved national coverage in The Sun on Sunday, as well as appearing in a host of local newspapers and trade titles.  Logistics UK arranged interviews for businesses taking part including broadcasts featuring Simon Griffin from Watts Truck and Van, who was interviewed on Global Radio Wales and Bauer Media Radio South Wales, and a representative from Yusen Logistics who spoke on BBC Radio Northampton. David Wells, Logistics UK’s Chief Executive, was interviewed about the campaign on LBC News while Natalie Chapman, Logistics UK’s Head of Policy – South, was interviewed on BBC Radio Kent.

The campaign also received the backing of government, with Transport Secretary Grant Shapps MP, Transport Minister Baroness Vere and Employment Minister Mims Davies MP all tweeting their support via social media channels. The Department for Work and Pensions also publicised the open day events via its network of careers advisers and job centres.

Gary Jackson, Head of HR Business Support at Yusen Logistics, said: “The Discover Logistics Careers campaign was a great opportunity for Yusen Logistics and has resulted in over 50 applications for various roles, including warehousing and driving. The response has been so positive that we are now looking to carry out more open days across the next twelve months and are also looking to establish more permanent careers offices at some of our facilities. Logistics is a continuously developing industry and we are always excited to find talented people who are interested in joining us in the adventure.”

Kevin Green, Marketing and Communications Director, Logistics UK, said: “We are delighted with the level of support our first Discover Logistics Careers campaign received from our members, the media, the government and the wider public. Given the well-documented skills shortages in logistics, this campaign has given businesses the opportunity to highlight the breadth of career opportunities available in our rewarding industry. I very much look forward to building on this early success and reprising our campaign next year.”
