DVSA issues revised Categorisation of vehicle defects
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has informed Logistics UK that it has now issued revised documentation for the Categorisation of vehicle defects.
This vital tome -- which documents how vehicle defects found during roadside inspections or vehicle tests are categorised and what action will be taken when they're found -- has been updated to align with recent changes to the HGV and PSV inspection manuals, Guide to maintaining roadworthiness (GTMR), and changes that will be contained in the revised Load Security Code of Practice, once released later this year.
“Members have been updated on the recent changes to the inspection manual and the GTMR,” says Phil Lloyd, Head of Engineering Policy at Logistics UK. “But members should pay attention to the main changes relating to the Load Security Code of Practice.”
The changes are as follows:
- XL rated curtain-side vehicles/trailers – a change to positive fit, being no more than a 30cm gap between load items (page 52).
- Skips – update on security arrangements and the stacking of skips (pages 52 and 53).
- Carriage of vehicle – the requirement to lash all wheels (page 53).
- Wheeled heavy plant – the requirement to lash and chock wheels (page 54).
“Additionally,” Lloyd continues, “memebers should be aware that more emphasis is being placed on vehicle/load height markers, which is aimed at reducing bridge strikes.” (See pages 62 and 66.)
