COVID-19 leads to improvement in delivery times
Road congestion and delivery times continue to be positively impacted by changes to traffic levels caused by coronavirus restrictions, Logistics UK’s latest Logistics Performance Tracker (LPT) reveals.
This is thought to be due to the reduction in car traffic in England, after the 5 November COVID-19 restrictions were announced. Car traffic in Great Britain is more than a third lower than pre-March lockdown levels, which has reduced traffic density considerably. After 5 November, car traffic fell from 18% below normal to 34%, while van traffic is just below normal levels.
The exception has been on roll-on, roll-off routes, where LPT respondents reported increased delays. Delays on the Dover-Calais ro-ro route increased from 9% in June to 32.2% in November.
As demand for road haulage grows, recruitment is also becoming more difficult, along with driver availability, as fewer and fewer qualified HGV drivers claim Jobseeker’s Allowance.
Logistics UK’s Performance Tracker monitors the performance of the logistics industry. The seventh in the series (LPT7) was conducted between 3-18 November 2020. There were more than 200 respondents spanning over 18 sectors in the UK – 43% were small businesses with fewer than 50 employees, a quarter had between 50 and 249 employees, while the remaining 32% were large businesses with more than 250 staff.
