Supply chain disruption is the result of a ‘perfect storm’ of factors, says Logistics UK
Long queues of HGVs waiting to board ferries at the Port of Dover are not solely a consequence of new post-Brexit customs arrangements, Logistics UK has said.
Since 1 January 2022, haulage companies have had to complete their UK customs documents in full before their HGVs and vans can board ferries bound for the EU. There is also a pre-notification requirement for imports of goods subject to sanitary and phytosanitary formalities.
While this may have contributed to delays, there is also a host of other factors that are exacerbating the issue, Logistics UK has said. The first is that there has been a faster than usual return to peak freight volumes early in the year.
“We understand the frustration of drivers who have been held up in queues for a long time; traffic is flowing but slower than normal. Our understanding is that this situation resulted from a combination of several factors,” said Sarah Laouadi, Head of International Policy, Logistics UK.
Added to which a quarter of the ferry fleet that operates across the Short Straits has recently been out of service, owing to refitting and essential maintenance. However, it is understood that at least one of the ferries has already returned to service.
Laouadi added: “As the fleet of ferries in operation through the Short Straits goes back to normal, we will have a more comprehensive view of the scale of the issues and how likely they are to last. At Logistics UK, we would be concerned if these queues were to continue after all ferries are back in operation.”
Logistics UK continues to urge hauliers to be extra vigilant in checking that their paperwork is in order before travelling. Incorrect or incomplete paperwork will mean your drivers will be unable to board ferries bound for the EU, which risks contributing to delays. Members currently experiencing delays at Dover and other UK ports are urged to contact Logistics UK to help it monitor the fast-changing situation. The business group would like to assure members that no competitively sensitive information will be disclosed.
