Union Connectivity Review – Logistics UK’s reaction
Ambitious solutions to improving connectivity between the four nations of the United Kingdom recommended in the Union Connectivity Review published last Friday (26 November 2021), have been broadly welcomed by Logistics UK.
Led by Sir Peter Hendy, current Chair of Network Rail, the report recommends that the government should design and implement a strategic transport network, dubbed UKNET, for the whole of the UK, with funding commitments targeted at those parts of the network that need it most.
Another key recommendation is to upgrade the key A75 link to improve freight and passenger connectivity between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The A75 is an important route for freight in Scotland, carrying high volumes of goods from the A74(M)/M6 near the English border with the port at Cairnryan, the departure point for ferry services to Northern Ireland.
“The A75 in Scotland is a key trading route linking Great Britain and Northern Ireland,” said Elizabeth de Jong, Director of Policy at Logistics UK, “but the road has been in need of investment for many years. Logistics UK will now be examining the implications of the Union Connectivity Review recommendations in more depth and working with UK government, devolved administrations, and members to ensure the best outcomes for the logistics industry.”
