Logistics firms battle for talent as mechanics’ salaries soar by 11.6%
The UK’s tight labour market is continuing to exert cost pressures on logistics businesses, with firms continuing to compete for skilled mechanics.
According to Logistics UK’s latest Logistics economic update, the average advertised salary for skilled mechanics increased by 11.6% last year.
The number of vacancies for the occupation remained consistently high throughout 2022, resulting in the advertised salary rising to £39,200 in the 12 months to December 2022. However, it is worth noting that advertised salaries are generally higher than reported salaries, for example Logistics UK’s latest Manager’s Guide to Distribution Costs (MGDC) update reported an actual salary of £36,900 in October 2022, markedly less than the advertised levels.
Sarah Watkins, Deputy Director – Policy Information, Logistics UK, said: “Our latest Logistics economic update reveals that the logistics labour market remains stubbornly tight. The significant advertised salary increases for HGV mechanic and HGV technician roles are borne out by the results of our most recent Logistics Performance Tracker, in which more than half of respondents reported a ‘severe’ or ‘very severe’ problem with recruiting HGV mechanics.”
Logistics UK is currently surveying members and industry stakeholders on skills and other issues to inform its flagship Logistics Report. Members completing the survey will receive a complimentary copy of the Logistics Report.
