SMART FREIGHT DELAY

News that the government’s SMART Freight system is unlikely to be fully operational by 1 January 2021 has been greeted with dismay by Logistics UK. Elizabeth de Jong, the business group’s Director of Policy, said it was a “crushing disappointment for the logistics sector”, bearing in mind that the system will be vital to the movement of goods to and from the EU, once the transition period ends.

LONDON BRIDGE BAN

Transport for London’s (TfL’s) decision to ban vehicles from London Bridge from 16 September will reduce the efficiency of logistics in the capital and harm economic recovery, according to Logistics UK. Natalie Chapman, Logistics UK’s Head of Urban Policy, said: “The bridge provides essential connectivity into London and by banning vehicles, it forces commercial drivers to take significant detours.”
