Logistics UK welcomes £100million funding for green aviation projects

The new government will make more than £100m in funding available for five research and development projects that aim to reduce the environmental impact of aviation.

The Department for Business and Trade said the funding would be delivered through the Aerospace Technology Institute Programme to help pioneer groundbreaking new technology, including zero emission hydrogen flight and sustainable propulsion systems.

The funding will go to five aerospace development projects led by GKN Aerospace, Queens University, Rolls-Royce, Short Brothers and ZeroAvia.

Alexandra Herdman, Senior Policy Manager, Logistics UK, said: “Logistics UK welcomes the additional financial support announced by the government to develop leading-edge green aerospace projects as the sector continues on its journey to net zero.

“The aviation sector is notoriously hard to decarbonise and investment in innovative technology will help reduce the amount of carbon offsetting as well as carbon capture and storage that is expected to be required to meet the 2050 target.

“Coupled with the UK government’s commitment to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) through the new SAF (Revenue Support Mechanism) Bill, this investment into innovation for aerospace is a clear sign that the government is serious about accelerating the transition to net zero aviation.”

Logistics UK reacts to Scottish government’s Aviation Statement

Responding to the Scottish Government’s new Aviation Statement, Alexandra Herdman, Senior Policy Manager at business group Logistics UK, says: “Transport Scotland’s Aviation Statement is a welcome starting point for wider discussions with the logistics sector about connectivity, trade and decarbonisation.

“Airfreight in Scotland plays a critical role in the economy and Scottish exports, and we look forward to working with the Scottish government on supporting and maximising economic growth in this area.

“We welcome the focus on increasing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production and its use in Scotland, but would support a more ambitious deadline than the 2030s for agreeing options and are pressing Transport Scotland to strive for greater urgency on its adoption across the sector.

“Scotland has the potential to be a trailblazer in SAF production which would enable faster decarbonisation of aviation across the whole of the UK, and we look forward to greater detail on how SAF can be produced and utilised in the upcoming Climate Change Plan.

“Logistics UK has a firm commitment to supporting innovation in low carbon fuels and our members are excited to hear more about proposals for a multimodal Hydrogen Hub at Glasgow Airport which, if successful, would allow Glasgow to be the first regional commercial airport to produce and use green hydrogen.”
