Logistics UK talks connected and autonomous mobility with minister

Elizabeth de Jong, Logistics UK’s Director of Policy, met with Minister for Investment Lord Grimstone this week (Monday 28 June 2021), to discuss the potential market for connected and autonomous mobility (CAM) within the UK’s logistics sector.

At a roundtable chaired by the minister, a number of key stakeholders discussed what the UK’s areas of competitive advantage are on CAM, and how they could translate into supporting the government’s wider objectives.

The minister was keen to understand the timeframe for the adoption of CAM within the sector, as well as its appetite to invest in this technology. He was also anxious to understand what impact any government investment in CAM may have on future proofing the UK’s existing logistics industry.

“We had a very constructive discussion with the minister on the future development of CAM and its potential applications within logistics,” said Elizabeth de Jong, “CAM technologies could alter the shape of logistics and the wider transport sector in the coming decades. However, if autonomous vehicles are to be adopted in the logistics industry it is vital that they fit the needs of a complex supply chain and allow businesses to build positive business cases to drive commercial investment.”

Logistics UK runs an Innovation Working Group which looks at what problems connected and autonomous vehicles could help the logistics industry to solve.
