Consultation on transforming northern transport launched and “we’ll be monitoring closely,” says Logistics UK

Transport for the North (TfN) has launched a 12-week consultation, taking place from 25 May to 17 August, for its revised Strategic Transport Plan for the north of England.

The consultation will inform TfN’s advice to government on transport policies for the region and focuses on how investment in transport can be leveraged to transform economic performance, provide for rapid decarbonisation and significantly reduce transport-related social exclusion.

“TfN’s plans set out a vision, objectives and long-term strategic priorities up to 2050 aimed at creating a consistent framework for the work of TfN with government, local transport bodies and delivery bodies,” said Jonathan Walker, Head of Cities and Infrastructure at Logistics UK.

“We’ll be monitoring the consultation closely throughout the 12-week period,” he continued, “and be reporting any relevant findings back to our members.”

DfT issues response to Traffic Commissioner Function Review

The Department for Transport (DfT) has issued its Traffic Commissioner (TC) Function Review document 2021-2022, following consultation with stakeholders, in which it makes a series of 13 proposals for change including:

  • The relationship between DVSA and the Office of the Traffic Commissioners.
  • The relationship between the Traffic Commissioners and DfT.
  • Consolidation of TCs into one independent tribunal rather than eight individual tribunals.
  • Establishment of a President, rather than the current Senior Traffic Commissioner.
  • How future operating costs, and fees, should be apportioned and set to better reflect the operations of the TCs.

Logistics UK members will be discussing these proposals at the next meeting of Road Council.

The DfT has indicated that, due to lack of Parliamentary time, there will be no significant changes in the near future, with many of the 13 recommendations being prioritised as ‘longer-term’ ambitions.

Members can find the full document, with the 13 recommendations, here.
