VE Day: Time for logistics to rise up and get involved

Thursday 8 May 2025 will mark 80 years since Victory in Europe (VE Day) when the Second World War came to an end in Europe. This is followed by the anniversary of Victory Over Japan (VJ Day) on Friday 15 August 2025, when Japan surrendered and marks the end of the Second World War in the Far East.

80 years on, the country is coming together through a series of national and local events and will show our gratitude to the men, women and children who fought for our freedom and paid the ultimate sacrifice to give 80 years of peace.

This year will be particularly poignant, as it will be one of the last opportunities to honour our living Second World War veterans, who fought so hard to preserve peace and freedom that enables our shared way of life. Logistics played a huge role in the Allies’ campaign, from getting troops and all their supplies to the front to keeping those at home stocked with what little food and other goods which were available.

The VE80 Campaign is encouraging logistics businesses nationwide to get involved in the programme of national celebration and remembrance, which will begin on 5 May with a national procession at the Cenotaph in London, and include street parties, a concert in Horseguards Parade and memorial events at the National Memorial Arboretum.

Every business has a story to tell, whether through the experiences of its staff and their family members or about the work that was carried out during the war itself.

If you have a story to share please email press.office@logistics.org.uk so we can include it in our VE80 coverage over the next few weeks. Maybe you could host a depot or office “street party” style event or exhibition for staff and families – or light up your business premises in celebration?

There are plenty of ideas available in the VE80 pack that you can download here.

Do send us photos and information about what your business does to celebrate so we can share the details.

News In Brief

DVSA updates Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness

The Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness (GTMR) outlines the regulations, requirements and industry best practice for maintaining your commercial vehicles - including daily checks, inspections, maintenance and record keeping. DVSA has updated the guide, updates include:

•    Updated guidance from the Traffic Commissioners on maintaining compliance.

•    Additional guidance for driver checks on vehicles arduous conditions.

•    Clearer requirements for brake assessments, risk assessments and Electronic Brake Performance Monitoring Systems.

The most significant changes relate to brake testing. As a reminder, each safety inspection must include a brake performance assessment (BPA) or a risk assessment if a laden test is not completed. Logistics UK sent a message about this requirement as part of the updates in November 2024, this new edition does not change the message on this.

Operators must make sure they familiarise themselves (and their maintenance provider if using a contractor) with the guidance ensuring to:

•    Review and comply with the brake assessment requirements.

•    Update maintenance systems accordingly.

Find the guide: Keeping commercial vehicles safe to drive (roadworthy) - GOV.UK .  Logistics UK has a briefing note detailing the changes, it is also a topic of the current round of member briefings – register here.
