Government announces additional planning reforms to speed up infrastructure
The government announced on 23 April amendments to the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, which it argues will lead to major projects being delivered “at least a year faster”.
The amendments include scrapping “burdensome” statutory consultation requirements for major projects, cutting the average two-year pre-consultation period in half.
The Planning and Infrastructure Bill Committee met for the first time on 24 April. Ahead of this, Logistics UK provided written evidence to the Committee and offered briefings to Rachel Taylor MP and Jim Dickson MP who we have built strong relationships with.
Logistics UK also submitted evidence to the Environmental Audit Committee's inquiry into airport expansion and climate and nature targets.

“To ensure that the logistics industry can continue to deliver for the UK’s economy, it is vital that planning reforms are speeded up, so that infrastructure and construction projects can be moved forwards at pace,” says Jonathan Walker, Logistics UK’s Head of Infrastructure.
“Logistics needs to be at the heart of all future development, not an afterthought, and we will be pressing to ensure that the concerns and needs of our members are heard moving forwards.”

News In Brief
Weight Restrictions to be introduced at the M48 Severn Crossing – Logistics UK to hold member briefing
National Highways is set to introduce a weight limit for heavy goods vehicles using the M48 Severn Crossing to future-proof the bridge.
Following safety inspections and to minimise further damage to the bridge, only heavy goods vehicles up to 7.5-tonnes in weight will be able to use the Severn crossing after inspections showed deterioration to the supporting cables.
From Tuesday 27 May, heavy goods vehicles over 7.5-tonnes will need to use the Prince of Wales bridge to travel between England and Wales.
This weight restriction will mean that two lanes on the M48 bridge will remain open to all other vehicles.
The weight restriction will need to remain in place for an estimated 12 to 18 months, dependent on further investigations and whilst National Highways develops and installs a medium-term solution, which will help manage in real-time the number of vehicles over 7.5t using the bridge. This will ensure vehicle loads remain within safe limits.
Logistics UK is hosting a free online member briefing in partnership with National Highways on 6 May from 10-11am to provide information and guidance on the impact of the restrictions: To join the briefing, please follow this link:
