Yorkshire haulage company scoops prestigious road freight operator award

Halifax-based trucking company Collett & Sons Ltd returned home victorious last October, after discovering that it had won in the coveted Road Freight Operator of the Year 2019 category, sponsored by Port of Dover, at FTA’s Logistics Awards 2019. The glittering awards ceremony was held at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in Central London on 24 October 2019.

The company, which has depots in Halifax, Goole and Grangemouth, combined intricate planning, expert heavy haulage and specifically engineered jacking and skidding operations. Over just four weeks, it delivered three 169-tonne SuperGrid transformers to UK National Grid substations.

Travelling 207km with three oversized loads, each project involved extensive pre-planning, liaison with ports, local authorities, residents and the police, and careful final jacking and skidding operations. With each loaded vehicle measuring 66m, parking restrictions and temporary road closures were also needed: all three transformers were delivered safely.

The board of judges, which represents some of the UK’s most influential logistics businesses, described the company’s work as a: “One-off designed project delivering excellent results.

David Collett, Managing Director, Collett & Sons Ltd, said: “We were delighted to be among the finalists, and to be presented with this prestigious award is an amazing achievement! We’ve got the perfect spot in our awards cabinet next to our Motor Transport Team of the Year Award!”

David Wells, Chief Executive of FTA, said: “These finalists represent the ‘best of the best’ of our sector; the businesses and individuals determined to keep Britain trading, both at home and overseas. They have been selected for their outstanding commitment, knowledge and expertise, and represent a wide range of UK companies across transport modes and business sectors. With a record number of entrants this year, each shortlisted business had to fight off very tough competition to secure their place in the final line up, and those who scooped the top prizes are truly at the top of their business games. They should be justly proud of the contribution they are making to both the logistics sector and wider UK economy.”
