Logistics UK joins new FORS governance group
Logistics UK has joined a revitalised Governance & Standards Advisory Group (GSAG), designed to influence the future direction of the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS), a voluntary accreditation scheme for fleet operators.
Comprised of operators, specifiers and stakeholders which provide advice and guidance on the development of FORS, GSAG does not have a role in the day-to-day management of FORS which is the job of the scheme administrator. Nor does it oversee the FORS fee structure, which is the job of a separate, independent group.
Launched by Transport for London (TfL) in 2008, FORS was originally a free, voluntary safety accreditation scheme intended to recognise London-based truck operators. The scheme went national in 2015 and by 2021 the number of accredited operators had risen to 4,850.
NEW STANDARD STRESSES DECARBONISATION
During the FORS annual conference held in Manchester this summer, details of the new version 6 of the FORS standard were shared with delegates, including how operators can meet the accreditation criteria at each stage of the scheme.
Placing a greater emphasis on the importance of decarbonisation to transport customers when assessing the performance of fleet operators, at least half of FORS Gold operators’ fleets must now meet the ‘ultra-low emission’ engine standards and the fleet replacement plan should ‘demonstrate progression towards 100% ultra-low emission fleet.'
INFORMING THE FUTURE OF FORS
Natalie Chapman, Head of Policy – South, Logistics UK, said: “As the largest business group to represent the logistics sector, Logistics UK was pleased to secure a place on FORS’ new Governance and Standards Advisory Group to help take the scheme forward.
“Last year we raised our members’ concerns ahead of a final report on a comprehensive review of FORS. We are now satisfied with the new structure of FORS and look forward to playing an even bigger role in the standards setting of FORS in the future,” Chapman said.
