A month in the media - June 2023

A variety of issues have hit the headlines during June, and the press office team has ensured Logistics UK and the views of its members continue to be covered.

By maintaining and building strong relationships with the media, and providing timely responses to issues, the team has generated significant coverage on topics such as skills, electric vehicles and longer semi-trailers. Between 24 May and 27 June the team achieved 329 items of editorial coverage, creating the opportunity for 66 million people to see Logistics UK’s opinions.

Generation Logistics also featured in The Sun, in an article on an ex-soldier who now works as an HGV driver. Logistics UK featured in an iNews article on which industries have worker shortages, and why, and was quoted at length in the print and online editions of the Financial Times on the shortage of HGV mechanics following the publication of Logistics UK’s Logistics Report 2023.

Longer semi-trailers

Interviews took place on the Kay Burley programme on Sky News, Channel 5 News and Sky News Radio regarding the permanent fixture of longer-semi trailers on the UK’s roads, and Logistics UK’s comments were broadcast on 18 commercial radio stations, including LBC News, TalkRadio and Central FM.

Rail freight

Logistics UK featured in the print and online editions of the Financial Times in an article on congestion, driver shortages and environmental concerns causing more companies to switch to rail freight.

Electric vehicles

Import tax

Logistics UK’s comments on the new import tax on EU food imports were published in the print and online editions of the Financial Times.

The month ahead

Over the next month, the Logistics UK media team will be focusing on policy-related issues such as decarbonisation, trade and the skills shortage, and reacting to breaking news stories as they unfold. The team will also continue to work on promoting Logistics UK’s 2023 events programme, with particular focus on the autumn Transport Manager conference series, the Van Awards and the Logistics Awards.

Have you got a story?  If you are keen to speak to the media about a pressing issue – from skills shortages to fuel costs, urban restrictions to future logistics – or to highlight some of the great work your organisation is doing, we would love to hear from you.  We are also keen to hear from those with personal achievements to shout about – maybe moving a very unusual load, staff members who have received special awards or with unusual hobbies or expertise.  And as always, the media is keen to talk to women working across the industry – we are particularly on the lookout for female drivers who are happy to talk to the press. Please contact Freya, Lauren or Jackie in the media team at press.office@logistics.org.uk – we look forward to hearing from you!
