Month in the media - November 2020
Logistics UK’s media team has achieved exceptional results in the past month, with the business group featuring heavily on major radio stations, TV broadcasts and in national newspapers. And, in addition to UK successes, the Logistics UK media team has also secured global coverage in countries as far afield as New Zealand, UAE, India, Canada and the USA.
ELIZABETH DE JONG AT SELECT COMMITTEE
On 11 November 2020, Director of Policy, Elizabeth De Jong, gave evidence at the House of Commons Select Committee on the Future Relationship with the European Union. Elizabeth’s appearance at the Select Committee, and her comments regarding Logistics UK’s concerns over the delayed Haulier Handbook and the lack of clarity surrounding NI-GB trade, achieved widespread media coverage. The team placed editorial stories with a wide range of national titles including The Independent, Financial Times (both in print and online), Reuters UK, Mail Online, Yahoo! UK & Ireland, MSN Web, City A.M Online and The Sun Online, as well as negotiating an interview for her with BBC Radio 5 Live Drive on the subject. In follow up, the team sold in an exclusive story to BBC2’s Newsnight on a letter written by Logistics UK’s Chief Executive, David Wells, to Michael Gove highlighting our key concerns on Brexit preparedness – this generated an opportunity for 2,695,500 people to hear Logistics UK’s issues.
TWITTER TAKEOVER
Thanks to our excellent relationships with the media, Logistics UK’s tweet in response to government’s announcement of a Business Task Force – which featured David Wells calling for action, not task forces – was retweeted by LBC radio presenter James O’Brien. This subsequently led to David’s statement receiving 660,000 impressions across all retweets and likes and over 8,000 engagements. Over the course of the next month, this single tweet has the potential to be seen by five million people according to our social media monitoring platform. Additionally, James O’Brien spoke about the tweet live on air on his national LBC Radio show, and mentioned Elizabeth’s appearance at the select committee and Logistics UK’s expertise in issues surrounding Brexit preparations.
DENMARK RESTRICTIONS
Following the mutation of coronavirus across Denmark’s mink farms and subsequent tightened travel restrictions, Logistics UK’s speed of response and outreach to the media ensured that our statement was published across multiple national news outlets including the Press Association, Sky News (web), The Independent (Web), Yahoo! UK & Ireland (Web), MSN UK, Daily Star, Mirror, MSN UK (Web) and The Sun Online.
THE MONTH AHEAD
Brexit will be a key focus for the Logistics UK media team as the 31 December transition period deadline draws closer. Other priorities include COVID-19, potentially focusing on the new tiered system and economic recovery, as well as starting work on Logistics UK’s new employment and skills campaign.
HAVE YOU GOT A STORY?
If you are keen to speak to the media about a pressing issue – from Brexit readiness to skills shortages, urban restrictions to future logistics – or to shout about some of the great work your organisation is doing, we would love to hear from you. We are also keen to hear from those with personal achievements to shout about – maybe moving a very unusual load, staff members who have received special awards or with unusual hobbies or expertise. And as always, the media is keen to talk to women working across the industry – we are particularly on the lookout for female drivers who are happy to talk to the press. Please contact Eleanor, Freya or Rona in the media team – we look forward to hearing from you!
