Month in the media – January 2023
The logistics industry has maintained a significant presence in the news over the past month thanks to the efforts of Logistics UK’s press office.
Key topics that generated coverage of note include the skills shortage, levelling up funding, the Northern Ireland Protocol and migrant fines for hauliers, all of which featured prominently in the media this month. By maintaining and building strong relationships with the media, and providing timely responses to issues, the Logistics UK press office team has ensured that the views of members are heard on these – and other – issues. The team achieved 129 items of editorial coverage between 25 December and 25 January, creating the opportunity for 27.5 million people to see Logistics UK and its messages.

SKILLS SHORTAGE
Logistics UK's driver shortage statistics were provided for an article on the BBC website which stressed the continuing need for improved facilities. Our comments on the skills shortage were published in the print and online editions of the Financial Times and great coverage was achieved on FT.com after supplying Peter Foster, the FT's Public Policy Editor, with information for his article on the post-Brexit labour shortage.
NORTHERN IRELAND
An in-depth interview took place on LBC News regarding the Northern Ireland Protocol. Logistics UK also took part in a panel discussion on BBC1 Northern Ireland's 'The View' programme regarding the political situation in Northern Ireland and how it relates to the logistics industry.
LEVELLING UP
Following the government’s levelling up funding announcement, Logistics UK took part in interviews on LBC News, ITV Meridian and Heart Kent.
MIGRANT FINES
Logistics UK's comments on migrant fine increases for UK hauliers were quoted several times on BBC1 South East news and twice on BBC Radio Kent.
BORDER CONTROLS
Logistics UK's comments were included in an article on Mail Online regarding the delay in the implementation of the new Entry and Exit System (EES).
THE MONTH AHEAD
The press team will be reacting to breaking news stories as they unfold, as well as continuing to focus on the skills shortage, with promotion of the Generation Logistics campaign at every opportunity and activity planned for Apprenticeship Week, which takes place from 6-12 February. The team will also be working on promotion of Logistics UK’s new events programme for 2023, in particular Supply Chain Resilience – Logistics UK’s Annual Business Conference – which will be held in London on 23 March.
Have you got a story? If you are keen to speak to the media about a pressing issue – from skills shortages to fuel costs, urban restrictions to future logistics – or to shout about some of the great work your organisation is doing, we would love to hear from you. We are also keen to hear from those with personal achievements to shout about – maybe moving a very unusual load, staff members who have received special awards or with unusual hobbies or expertise. And as always, the media is keen to talk to women working across the industry – we are particularly on the lookout for female drivers who are happy to talk to the press. Please contact Freya, Lauren or Jackie in the media team at press.office@logistics.org.uk – we look forward to hearing from you!
