Save this hedgehog - dispose of your litter properly!

Did you know that discarded litter, including drinks cans and plastic bottles, sandwich packaging, discarded plastic wrapping and even fruit, lures hungry animals like hedgehogs and rabbits out of their natural habitats and closer to the roads network, where they are either hit by vehicles or can become trapped and die in tossed litter?

There are an estimated 803,000 commercial drivers in the UK driving long journeys and treating lorries as their home/office, therefore wanting to keep them tidy and clean.

Out of this figure National Highways and Keep Britain Tidy estimate there are approximately 406,000 litterers.

National Highways is responsible for operating, maintaining and improving 4,500 miles of England’s motorways and major A-roads, linking towns, cities, ports and airports, and getting people to where they need to be on time – safely and reliably.

Roadside litter is a serious issue that affects the environment, wildlife and the safety of road users. It also endangers the people who collect it and takes away the valuable resources that could be recycled and better used to improve the road network, a cost that National Highways estimates at £1billion per annum.

To support this vision and to have a network predominantly free from litter without compromising safety, National Highways has, for the first time, developed a new campaign that aims to educate and change road users’ behaviour towards littering.

Using social media and roadside messaging, the campaign aims to encourage drivers to think twice before littering and improve the environment for all road users.

Logistics UK is a proud partner with the new National Highways Litter Campaign and will be sharing advice and information with members in the coming months to reduce the impact litter has on wildlife across the roads network.

Please keep your litter in your cab until you can dispose of it safely in a bin – the environment will thank you and your drivers!
