Generation Logistics case study: Amy, Innovation Degree Apprentice, CEVA Logistics

Amy didn’t know what she wanted to do when she finished her A levels, or much about logistics. However, now that she’s found her passion she enjoys educating people on just how exciting a career in the industry can prove to be.

“I don’t think my friends and family understood what logistics was before I started my role,” she says. “But since becoming passionate about it and working in the industry, I have taught them and shown them what it actually is.

“I work a hybrid role. I can be found at CEVA sites at the warehouse or at transport operations,” she continues. “My role is to visit the operation, understand what the key issues are, meet the site managers and understand what their main bugbears are and then see what we can do to improve them using innovation.

“Innovation is defined as something incremental that could have a huge impact. It could be something tiny that has a huge impact or something crazy and futuristic, like robotic technology or drones, that improves the operation and can have real benefits.”

The problem-solving aspect of the role and the opportunity for growth and development really swung it for Amy.

“My job role requires A levels, a really good working attitude and preferably some experience in project management. I quite like solving problems and meeting people, so when I saw the role and it combined meeting people and innovation and designing solutions, I thought it was really interesting. It looked like a great opportunity with a global company.”

In fact, the role has far outweighed her expectations.

“I can’t define what I expected from logistics, all I can say is, it’s really exciting: I really enjoy the versatility of my role, I get to travel all over, meet lots of different people and actually make an impact. Seeing something you’ve envisioned come to life is really amazing.

And Amy’s keen to spread the word to other hungry academics who aren’t sure where their future lies.

“Logistics was never advertised as a career role or industry at school,” she says, “which is why I’m so passionate about getting into schools and sixth forms and teaching people about the opportunities available.”

What a great attitude and another inspiring case study in the Generation Logistics campaign.
