Working for our members – Freight Councils
By Jonathan Walker, Head of Planning and Infrastructure, Logistics UK.
A key way to engage on the latest policy changes and share your views is at our freight councils.
Logistics UK recently held its latest round of Freight Council meetings, which give members the opportunity to learn about the latest policies being proposed by UK, regional and local government and their agencies and the implications of these for logistics operations. In addition, the meetings help shape Logistics UK’s response to proposals and provide attendees with the chance to network with peers in the industry.
With 13 in-person and online meetings taking place across the UK, from Cardiff to Belfast, Coventry to Glasgow, the meetings, which are held three times a year, allow Logistics UK’s policy team to meet with members to discuss the latest policy changes.
Items on the agenda recently included the regulatory regime for battery electric vehicles over 4.25 tonnes, the impact of the zero emission vehicle mandate on fleet renewal and road user charging.
Members shared valuable insight and experiences which we will take away and use to inform, shape and influence our future policy work. We are calling for a review of the regulatory threshold of 3.5 tonnes for zero emission vehicles and so feedback will be used to directly inform our response.
Engagement in our Freight Councils is vital to ensure the organisation can represent the views of our industry accurately in discussions with parliamentarians and other legislators. Meetings also considered regional issues, briefing members on localised updates, impacting the daily lives of our sector across the UK. The meetings are invaluable and enable direct contact with key organisations.
We also often have guest speakers which allows members the opportunity to ask questions directly to those in positions of authority, as well as giving leaders and policy makers the chance to understand the challenges faced on the ground by logistics businesses. For example, last month Chief Inspector Graham Dodds MBE, Head of Road Policing, Police Service of Northern Ireland spoke to our Northern Ireland Freight Council while representatives from Transport for London spoke to our Greater London Freight Council.
Our next round of Freight Council meetings will run in January and February 2025 and I really encourage anyone who has not come along before to join us – they are vital in shaping our policy proposals and with the new government, we are expecting a flurry of consultations and new policy proposals so we want to hear from as many members as possible.
Logistics UK also hosts a set of working groups which discuss specific specialist topics, such environmental issues, customs and trade, or employment and skills.
