Policy Campaign Spotlight

Campaign highlights from Logistics UK's policy team for January 2021

Direct Vision Standard permits

Enforcement of the London Direct Vision Standard (DVS) will commence 1 March 2021, requiring vehicles over 12 tonnes gross vehicle weight to hold a permit to drive on Transport for London (TfL) roads. Several of our members have expressed concerns about this, after experiencing difficulties with TfL's permit application process or recognising that due to Covid constraints on workshops, it will not be possible to finish retrofitting their entire fleet before the start date. We have engaged with TfL on these issues and are already assisting in its development of solutions for both of these problems, such as speeding up the permit application process and the creation of an "allow list" to provide operators more time to fit necessary equipment and obtain permits.

Ending sales of new petrol and diesel cars and vans

Logistics UK is pushing government for more intervention to support our sector after it brought forward the dates for ending sales of new petrol and diesel cars and vans to 2030, particularly as this earlier date will be challenging for vehicle operators who have already faced significant costs in handling the operating disruption caused by the COVID pandemic and subsequent economic downturn. We are asking government to: address barriers with upgrading and increasing charging infrastructure and electricity supply; increase grant support for electric and alternative fuel cars and vans, and to encourage local-level incentives for low-emission freight vehicles.
