Generation Logistics celebrates Artificial Intelligence Appreciation Day

To recognize and appreciate the impact of AI on our lives, as part of #AIAppreciationDay we spoke to InstaDeep’s Senior Sales Executive – and AI expert – Nathan Jones, to find out its role in the company, how he’s utilising it and what he thinks its future holds…

First of all, tell us when you decided a career in logistics was for you?

Since childhood. My father was a builder’s merchant in the Welsh valleys, so I was helping to deliver essentials, such as Calor Gas, to homes during the winter, often in challenging weather conditions!

Nowadays, it’s one of the key sectors where InstaDeep’s customised solutions and products, such as DeepPack™, are having a real and profound impact. Planning, organising and managing the efficient distribution of resources is fundamental to our lives and it’s an industry that’s existed since the dawn of time.

The pandemic brought this industry into the mainstream and we should all have a greater appreciation of what’s involved in getting goods and services delivered.

What does your day-to-day job involve? How is AI applied at your firm?

My job is helping companies to define their challenges, guiding them on the first steps of their AI journey and identifying where our solutions and products will have the greatest impact and value.

Strategically, the operational change and managing the impact of that change can be as crucial as the innovation itself. The successful collaboration of humans and technology will ultimately define the success of AI and when deep domain knowledge combines with our AI expertise, that’s where the magic happens.

What is it about AI that you find stimulating?

It’s undoubtedly one of the defining technologies of our era and we are still really at its beginning. AI’s continuous advancement (for example, the massive growth of Generative AI in 2023 alone), its ability to transform industry, its integration into our everyday lives and its ability to do things that were previously otherwise unachievable are just a few reasons.

I think it is also the challenge of ensuring that human lives are augmented as a result of AI and being able to figure out how we work side-by-side that I find really interesting.

What would you say to people who are wary of AI?

To be wary of it is a natural instinct. There are certainly areas and applications that need higher regulation than others, but AI’s current application and potential to solve problems, find cures for disease and improve our lives are incredible.

I would say get a good understanding of the basics including its history and origins, from reading and free online learning, understand the different branches and their application and have an open mind. Additionally, make sure that what you see and read is from a trusted source.

What does the future hold for AI in your opinion?

Predictions have been made across the spectrum and even experts are divided. No one can predict what will happen even in the next five years. My hope is that we all can harness AI’s power to achieve amazing outcomes for humanity, such as curtailing climate change and advancement in biotechnology whilst at an organisational – and even an individual –

level, we all take responsibility for ensuring ethical guidelines, transparency, fairness and accountability.
