Generation Logistics Case Study

Rachel Forsythe, Customs Compliance Manager – Unipart Company

I am a subject matter expert for all customs matters within Unipart.  When I first joined in 2019, it was primarily automotive, managing UK import and export processes. Now I manage and oversee the whole group and assist on a global scale.

In the last 12 months, I have been invited to represent Unipart at what would be considered as the “top table” within Customs and International Trade, and I Chair a Customs and Tariff Working group for an external professional body for the automotive sector, which is my professional highlight to date.

Unipart has supported any training needs and allowed me to develop and grow, which allows me to not only demonstrate my skills and expertise to within the business, but to any government authority and other external businesses and regulatory authorities.

I studied Forensic and Investigative Studies at university, and my role now sometimes requires an investigative focus. I also became a certified customs practitioner whilst working within my current role, achieveing a Level 4 in Advanced Customs in 2021. I found my current role on a job site and I was attracted to it because it was a fully customs and international trade-integrated role.

My previous role had a light touch of customs, but was mainly logistics and projects. I really enjoyed customs and wanted to pursue it as a career path.

I never imagined how intricate and how many different pathways there are associated with Customs and International Trade as a whole!

The ability to think strategically and methodically is crucial to the role; it is easy to learn the technical aspects of customs, but critical thinking is a must.
