UK fleets are focused on decarbonising operations as part of the journey to net zero – report

The UK’s logistics and transportation industry is ramping up efforts to decarbonise as firms forge ahead to net zero and look for ways to reduce their impact on the environment.

That’s according to a report by Samsara — the pioneer of connected fleet technology used to increase the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of businesses — which found that

84% of operations leaders say increasing environmental sustainability is a priority.

According to the State of Connected Operations Report, 38% of firms have already implemented a formal sustainability programme, with a further 59% planning to do this in 2022 to curb emissions.

The figures for the UK echo industry-wide moves across the globe to embrace a shift towards sustainability.

UK FLEET INTEREST IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES IS ACCELERATING

The report also found that half of UK businesses reliant on fleets have accelerated their transition to electric vehicles (EVs) as spikes in fuel prices continue to hammer diesel-powered vehicle users.

Not only is Samsara technology supporting fleets on their road to net zero, the company is also providing the connected tech to manage the transition of EVs.

This means fleets can actively monitor their mileage and maintenance costs so that they can compare their EVs’ cost per mile with their existing legacy vehicles.

“These findings are unequivocal,” said Philip van der Wilt, VP & General Manager, Samsara, EMEA.

“The logistics and road haulage industry is committed to embracing environmental sustainability, which has been brought into sharp focus with skyrocketing fuel prices and customer pressures.

“We’re seeing a strong appetite to move to mixed fuel, combining compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric or complete EV adoption,” he added.

WHAT THE INDUSTRY CAN DO AS THE ENVIRONMENT REACHES A TIPPING POINT

Digital tools — such as those provided by Samsara— are an essential investment for operations looking to improve their resilience. The data that these systems produce help managers pinpoint exactly where efficiencies can be made.

Recently published data from 395 large Samsara customers in the field services and logistics industries in the US and Canada found that greater operational oversight led to a 40% decrease in wasteful engine idling.

The use of technology and data to improve vehicle and operational efficiency was spelt out in Samsara’s inaugural ESG report published earlier this year.

As Samsara co-founder and CEO Sanjit Biswas explained in his introduction to the report: "As a society, we’ve reached an inflection point as the environment sits at a tipping point.

"Customers tell us that by using our solutions, they’ve reduced safety incidents, saved hundreds of thousands of gallons of fuel, and reduced their emissions.

"Samsara is in a unique position to help these organisations improve and measure the impact of their efforts, as we work together to make the world’s operations safer and more sustainable," he said.
