Campaign highlight - Logistics UK launches the UK Logistics Network: Waterborne Freight

Logistics UK has been long calling on government to develop a national freight network. To help kickstart that conversation, the business group published its UK Logistics Network report in autumn 2024, which predominantly focused on road and rail connectivity to UK ports.

Building on this work, last month, Logistics UK launched a new report highlighting the untapped potential of the UK's inland and coastal waterways for moving freight. The UK Logistics Network: Waterborne Freight calls for a radical rethink of waterways as core components of modern multimodal logistics, and for the expansion of their use to transport freight to reduce road congestion, lower emissions, improve air quality, and enhance regional connectivity.

The report identifies the potential of waterborne freight and calls to improve oversight of the waterways. Recommendations include setting a growth target for water freight, reintroducing freight facilities grants in England, improving port and waterway infrastructure as well as asks around technological innovation and collaboration for multimodal solutions.

Logistics UK will continue to engage with the waterborne freight sector through Council meetings and regular conversations, working to secure a government national freight network.
