2022 – the year of the van

Sponsored content

2022 has been another busy twelve months in the van sector with changing legislation and decarbonisation targets moving ever closer.

To help keep operators up to date with the latest compliance and technologies, and to celebrate the work of the sector, Logistics UK has once again hosted a number of van events throughout the year, supported by its Van Gold Partners: The AA, Bott Ltd, Brigade Electronics, Lex Autolease, Quartix, TVL and WTW.

VANS TODAY & VAN DRIVER OF THE YEAR

In April, Logistics UK hosted Vans Today, two conference sessions in London and Sheffield. As well as changing legislation and the latest technologies, these sessions also focused on maintaining second-hand vehicles and the vital topic of driver well-being. Drivers play a key role in the sector, and Logistics UK is proud to celebrate their accomplishments throughout the year. In May, the business group crowned Paul Simonds of G4S Cash Solutions its Van Driver of the Year 2022 following a competition day held at Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre alongside ITT Hub and the Future Logistics Conference.

The role of a van driver is varied and complex, requiring a multitude of skills; drivers often have to navigate changing road spaces and time pressures while ensuring they demonstrate safe and efficient driving at all times. As part of the competition, entrants took park in a series of challenges designed to replicate the skills needed, with Simonds fighting off tough opposition from 10 other entrants.

NEXT GENERATION VAN

In July, Logistics UK hosted its second Next Generation Van conference in Coventry, exploring the steps operators need to take to ensure the necessary power supply for their depots’ operations both bow and for the future. As well as looking into current progress, the conference also provided an insight into future van taxation and key asks of government, and allowed delegates the opportunity to hear from senior industry figures from organisations such as Ford Motor Company, Arrival, Western Power Distribution (National Grid) and Transport for West Midlands.

VAN AWARDS 2022

Logistics UK’s 2022 van events programme culminated with its annual Van Awards which celebrate the operators that have made a significant contribution to industry over the past twelve months. Awards included Hero of the Year, won by Nathan White, Lead Driver at Sciensus and Winning at Wellbeing, won by The Clancy Group. Winners in all the award categories were automatically shortlisted for the Van Business of the Year.

Logistics UK’s Head of Events, Katia Yakovleva, said: “Logistics UK is delighted to celebrate the dedication and achievements of the sector and to offer members the opportunity to hear the latest updates from across industry. As we head towards 2023, please do keep an eye on the Logistics UK events page to see what van-focused events we will be hosting in your area.”

The business group is planning to launch a new van industry activity next year too.
