Policy campaign highlights – September 2022
Collaborating on warehousing improvements
On Thursday 8 September, the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) held a roundtable with key stakeholders, including the Cabinet Office and the Department for Transport (DfT), Logistics UK, the British Property Federation, along with interested members. The roundtable explored how land is used for warehousing by the logistics sector and wider industry, as well as how engagement, planning and building on available land could be improved. There was a deep dive into the issues that large multinationals and SMEs experience in finding warehouses in the right site and location. Logistics UK will continue to engage with DLUHC on this work as it aims to review where growth is and look at future challenges and solutions to warehouse sites, including land use and planning impacts.
This roundtable follows Logistics UK’s regular monthly check in meetings with DLUHC, as well as engagement with the planning division of DfT. DLUHC has spoken to our Warehouse Working Group at both meetings we have held this year, and Logistics UK held a DfT-led planning roundtable with members in February. As a result, Logistics UK has been given a prominent seat in DLUHC's stakeholder engagement.
Another outcome is the government commitment to publish a consultation on planning and logistics, as announced in the Future of Freight plan. Logistics UK is liaising with DfT, the lead department, on its engagement with the consultation when it is published this autumn. The business group’s talks with DLUHC have also led to a policy position, agreed by the Warehouse Working Group, that it will campaign for a review of permitted development rights to better support changes to existing sites without the need for new planning consent, as well as a guide for planning authorities to help them understand the value of logistics sites to their local economy when making planning decisions.
