Policy Campaign Spotlight – July 2022

What’s next in the Future of Freight plan?

Following the government’s publication of the Future of Freight plan – the first cross-modal and cross-government plan for the UK freight transport sector – Logistics UK’s focus is now on making sure commitments made remain a priority for government.

Logistics UK worked with government to develop the plan, which takes on board our vision for the future of the industry, in the short, medium and long term. See the Future of Freight plan here.

With many individual policy wins for Logistics UK’s members included in the plan, priorities include identifying a national freight network, undertaking valuation of freight studies, improving visibility of freight in infrastructure planning and supporting modal shift.

There is plenty to do and we’ll now collaborate with government and other stakeholders to drive forward the commitments, such as:

  • feeding into the upcoming planning and logistics call for evidence, taking member input at working groups and Freight Councils;
  • supporting the creation of an Energy Forum stakeholder group, which members may wish to join;
  • engaging with the regulatory review on barriers to zero carbon energy infrastructure, and we will put forward members’ views and challenges to influence change;
  • prioritising people and skills through the Generation Logistics campaign.

The publication of the plan is a good step forward, but Logistics UK is keen to keep up the momentum and focus on action to address the challenges the logistics sector faces. We will work with government on members’ priorities and to help them to understand the value of freight.
