Policy Campaign Highlight – April 2023

Highlighting a campaign currently being run by Logistics UK's policy team.

ROUNDTABLE ON LOW CARBON FUELS

Logistics UK is seeking a long-term plan from government for utilising Low Carbon Fuels (LCFs) across transport modes. Last month, the business group organised a parliamentary roundtable on LCFs, chaired by Transport Committee member Greg Smith MP, where logistics businesses highlighted the need for a LCF strategy if decarbonisation targets are to be met.

During the roundtable, members from all modes of transport discussed the need for a strategy to enable the sector to meet the phase out dates for traditional vehicle fuels and technologies, with Greg Smith MP commenting: “It was extremely useful to hear all voices around the table and listen to everyone’s priority, from road, rail, air, sea and inland waterways”.

Businesses also highlighted that LCFs can provide a viable option for reducing carbon emissions by up to 80% with immediate effect, without significant vehicle modifications needed. However, with several LCF options available, Logistics UK is calling for a strategy to narrow down options and agree a way forward, so businesses can invest in decarbonisation in confidence.

In the documents published alongside the Powering Up Britain: Energy Security Plan, the government has said it will publish a LCF Strategy later this year, which will set out a vision for LCF deployment across transport modes in the period to 2050.

Logistics UK looks forward to seeing the strategy in due course and in the meantime, will continue to engage with members and stakeholders on wider topics around investment, infrastructure, and decarbonisation.
