Van market records best first half year since 2021 but heavy vans and BEV registrations decline
According to figures released on 4 July by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), there was mixed news about van registrations for June 2024 – despite the van sector recording its best first half year since June 2021.
After a record-breaking run of growth over the previous 17 months, registrations for new light commercial vehicles were down -4.5% in June with only 33,066 registrations compared to 34,630 for last June.
However, the first six months of registrations for 2024 were up 4.5% with 177,620 vehicles registered compared with the first half of 2023 which recorded 169,926 registrations.
June registrations of vans weighing more than 2.0 to 2.5 tonnes were up by 14.0% to 7,169 units (6,291 June 2023) and those weighing less than or equal to 2.0 tonnes were up 58.7% to 806 (508 June 2023).
In the heaviest sector which accounts for two thirds of the market, vehicles weighing above 2.5 tonnes up to 3.5 tonnes, registrations fell 8.3% to 21,677 units (23,640 June 2023).
There was continued disappointment about the number of battery electric vans (BEVs) registrations, which fell for a third month this year, and which are down -16.8% to 1,476 units compared with June 2023 when there were 1,775 registrations. As a result, in the year to date, BEVs account for just 4.7% of all new light van registrations compared with 5.2% for the same period last year.
Denise Beedell, Senior Policy Manager said, “With manufacturers mandated to ensure zero emission vehicles comprise a minimum of 10% of their new van registrations this year and 16% in 2025, seeing market share continue to fall is a cause for concern.
"Logistics UK continues to call for fiscal incentives to support van operators with the transition to zero emission fleets and also for measures to ensure the public charge point network is fit for purpose for vans.”
