The connected fleet

The connected fleet will be crucial to the transport and logistics sector working smarter as it plots a course for recovery, Beverley Wise, Director UK & Ireland, Webfleet Solutions, explains.
The transport industry has provided a critical lifeline during the coronavirus pandemic, delivering a range of essential goods and services. Like most sectors, however, it has been hit hard, with the commercial fallout having a dramatic impact on trade and global supply chains.
The vaccination programme offers a beacon of hope, but the road ahead remains an uncertain one. And as the sector sets its sights on recovery, numerous challenges – from rising fuel prices and skills shortages to burgeoning red tape – must be overcome.
The case for utilising the full potential of smart technologies to control costs and drive improvements in efficiency and productivity has become all the more persuasive.
Enter stage left – the telematics platform, the solution to digitising operations and generating data insights to improve decision-making.
A BOOST TO TRANSPORT WORKFLOW
Telematics applications will automate a range of key business processes to help improve workflow and transport logistics.
WEBFLEET TachoShare, for example, is a remote download and archiving module that helps keeps trucks on the road, reduces admin and supports the compliance process.
Almost a third of transport companies spend at least 30 minutes per vehicle per month retrieving tachograph data. The solution helps address this, digitally downloading tachograph data from vehicles and enabling users to share it directly with their analysis software. This means it can be integrated with existing IT systems with less disruption.
The integration of in-vehicle telematics devices with mobile hardware can also play an important role in helping drivers complete a variety of critical daily tasks. Mobile business apps on tablet-style driver terminals, for example, enable VOSA-compliant daily vehicle checks to be carried out digitally, with results instantly relayed to the back office.
Asset tracking functionality, meanwhile, offers full visibility over the location and usage of trailers and other powered machinery, ensuring they remain on their radar.
A SPOTLIGHT ON COST REDUCTION
Telematics reporting tools also offer vital business intelligence on fleet fuel consumption and the factors that influence mpg. As a result, significant bottom line savings can be delivered through optimised routeing, more efficient allocation of jobs and improvements in driving performance.
Fleet management solutions such as WEBFLEET will profile drivers on a range of performance indicators, including speeding, idling and harsh steering and braking, and empower them to correct their driving style through real-time feedback.
The potential savings are proven. Scottish haulier Ian Craig Haulage, for example, increased mpg by 10 per cent by using WEBFLEET, while logistics specialists Corporate Solutions realised mpg improvements of 9.2 per cent.
