Policy Campaign Spotlight – February 2021

Find out about the latest developments on Logistics UK's policy campaigns

WELSH GOVERNMENT ENGAGEMENT

We have continued our engagement with ministers and key officials in the Welsh Government following the end of the EU Transition Period and the publication of the draft Transport Plan for Wales. Logistics UK continues to maintain dialogue with Ministers Ken Skates and Lee Waters on these issues and has committed to advancing members’ concerns and interests as the Welsh administration develops its proposed Freight and Logistics Plan for Wales (contained within the overall draft Transport Plan).

VAN DECARBONISATION AND SECURITY

Logistics UK’s Van Policy Working Group has several policy campaigns underway. Our campaign for a fairer way of funding energy supply upgrades to commercial vehicle depots received a boost recently, with the announcement of a call for evidence for projects that could be supported with network investment. We are also pleased to have been invited to join the Zero Emission Road Freight Advisory Committee as it looks for alternative fuels for vehicles where electrification is not a feasible option, and to have been invited to join a National Police Chiefs Council workshop looking at reducing vehicle theft, delivering on a key ask in our 2020 Van Security Report to engage with national police and crime agencies on the matter.

BUDGET 2021: OUR KEY ASKS FOR MEMBERS

The logistics industry has called for government support in the 2021 Budget to ensure the continued health of the UK’s supply chain. In a letter to Chancellor Rishi Sunak MP, sent ahead of the spring Budget, Logistics UK has urged government to implement a series of measures. In addition to holding fuel duties at present levels and incentivising low carbon alternatives, the letter urges the Chancellor to facilitate access to employment within the sector through interest-free loans or grants to aid training. The letter concludes with a call for further infrastructure investment, designed to support transfer of freight between transport modes, as well as prioritising investment in a charging infrastructure which will help speed adoption of electric vehicles nationwide.
