Policy Campaign Spotlight – March 2022

Planning and logistics

Logistics UK has been facilitating discussions with government and members to discuss how the planning system can be improved and better meet the logistics industry’s needs. This includes reviewing and amending planning policy and legislation to support logistics operators when they need to develop a new or existing site, as well as to improve planning for lorry parking and driver facilities.

In February, Logistics UK hosted a roundtable meeting which brought together relevant stakeholders including members and officials from the Department for Transport’s (DfT)  Planning Policy, Housing and Transport team. At this roundtable discussion, members had the opportunity to have their questions answered by planning experts and to reflect on what is working well in the current system and what needs improvement. The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) is expected to publish a call for evidence on this topic later this year, so at the roundtable discussion, government officials requested examples of members’ own experiences of the planning system to back up anecdotal claims that planning was moving too slowly to support logistics businesses. These case studies will provide the evidence for a report which will be utilised to influence policy.

Two years after the White Paper on planning was published, Logistics UK has developed this campaign to bring logistics businesses face-to-face with government officials. Logistics UK will continue to engage with both DLUHC and DfT to produce a report to accurately reflect the logistics sector’s perspectives and to effect policy changes where needed.
