Policy Campaign Spotlight – February 2022
Highlighting campaigns currently being run by Logistics UK’s policy team.
ROUTE TO NET ZERO
Logistics UK has been working with members and government to showcase the logistics industry’s commitment to reaching net zero by 2050. The decarbonisation mission will be challenging due to the variety and types of vehicles across all modes, however, Logistics UK’s members have demonstrated their commitment to meeting environmental goals and putting strategies in place to reduce transport emissions.
As part of the route to net zero campaign, Logistics UK is continuously engaging with government about what it can do to help the industry, such as introducing financial incentives and establishing policy frameworks to support decarbonisation. Recent actions include meeting the Transport Minister responsible for net zero, Trudy Harrison MP, to explain the challenges and opportunities members are facing, and responding to a Transport Select Committee inquiry into alternative fuels, infrastructure and fuels policy.
We are also calling on members to demonstrate their commitments by joining our Route to Net Zero campaign. This involves pledging to support the campaign and sending us your company's environmental or CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) report. Logistics UK has set up an information hub of useful reports, documents and links to information to help support members on their net zero journey.
Logistics UK continues to engage with government, such as giving input into the government’s low carbon fuels strategy and highlighting how infrastructure can be developed to help meet environmental goals.
DRIVER FACILITIES
Securing adequate overnight lorry parking and improvements to driver facilities has been one of Logistics UK’s longest running campaigns. Logistics UK has been urging government to deliver its promise to address the shortfall of overnight parking based on a 2018 report highlighting the need for at least 1,400 more lorry parking spaces in England.
Logistics UK is calling on the government to address long-term barriers to lorry parking provision, such as planning and availability of land. As a result of our campaign, the government has committed funding to improve current driver facilities and has created a dedicated team of civil servants to review how to leverage private sector investment and overcome planning system problems; and how to ensure public sector bodies can support the provision of better driver facilities.
