Policy wins – March 2023

Wins recently achieved by Logistics UK's policy team.

PLANS TO STREAMLINE PLANNING PROCESS FOR NATIONALLY SIGNIFICANT INFRASTRUCTURE SCHEMES

The UK government has announced proposals to streamline the planning process in England and Wales for nationally significant infrastructure schemes following a series of high profile delays. Logistics UK has raised concerns regarding delays to major schemes, the amount of time it takes for them to secure Development Consent Orders and the impact this has on members’ ability to plan and invest.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities (DLUHC) has recognised the need for change to the Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) consenting process and will now be consulting over coming months on how to streamline and strengthen the process. Logistics UK will be responding to the consultation and will seek feedback from members.

NEW STUDY ANNOUNCED FOR WALES RAIL TRANSPORT

On 2 February, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced a study that will help develop options for new stations and services on the South Wales Main Line, in response to the findings of the Union Connectivity Review. Logistics UK has been calling for greater collaboration between the Welsh and UK governments, which it included in its response to the review.

The study includes £2.7 million of funding from the UK government and will help to ease congestion on the M4 by improving rail transport options in the region – a development that is welcomed by Logistics UK. A series of options will be considered as part of this study, among which is the development of five brand new stations between Cardiff and the Severn Tunnel.
