Campaign highlights 08 August 2024

Consultation launched to review planning policy: Last week, Angela Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government announced a review of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), something Logistics UK has long been calling for.

The consultation is seeking views on the government's proposed approach to revising the NPPF in order to achieve sustainable growth and includes details on supporting economic growth in key sectors, referencing freight and logistics - given their importance to the economic future.

It reflects feedback from our sector by highlighting the critical role of freight and logistics in UK economic growth and productivity, setting out the importance of the national network of storage and distribution infrastructure to enable local, regional, national and international operations.

The consultation proposes wording to ensure supply chains, transport innovation and decarbonisation are considered in terms of the locational requirements of the storage and distribution centres. These proposals aim to support the growth of the sector, through facilitating decarbonisation, adapting to changing patterns of global change and adopting new technologies.

Logistics UK has been calling for planning reform to enable goods to be moved in the most productive, strategic and green way. Given the sector is becoming ever smarter and more integrated, within businesses and between logistics sites and transport modes, the infrastructure it relies upon must become more integrated and multimodal too.

The business group has outlined numerous times how bottlenecks in the UK's logistics infrastructure, slow pace of planning and delivery, and lack of long-term plans create inefficiencies and inhibit private investment.

Therefore, Logistics UK has welcomed this consultation and will be responding, making the case that the final plans must take into account the needs of logistics and further emphasising the need for the current slow and inflexible nature of the planning system to be addressed to support the delivery of new logistics sites and enable existing sites to be adapted efficiently.

To help shape Logistics UK's consultation response, please contact Jonathan Walker, Head of Cities and Infrastructure Policy.
