Policy wins – October 2022

The logistics industry faces significant challenges and Logistics UK continues to engage on the key policy areas that matter most to members.

IMPROVING URBAN ACCESS

Oxfordshire County Council is proposing to introduce traffic filters in six key locations around the city of Oxford aimed at reducing through traffic. Following engagement with Logistics UK, local businesses, resident associations and other groups, the County Council has decided that the filters will only apply to private cars with exemptions for HGVs and vans. By not including HGVs and vans in the traffic filters, it is expected that the logistics industry will benefit from congestion reduction. Logistics UK is continuing to engage with county councillors and officials in Oxford through meetings and consultation responses to recognise the essential role of logistics.

REDUCING THE IMPACT OF RISING ENERGY COSTS AND DISRUPTION

Logistics UK wrote to the new Prime Minister and Cabinet in early September, asking them to ensure Logistics UK member interests were included in discussions relating to energy cost increases and supply risks to ensure effective contingency planning. In these letters, Logistics UK called for clarity on government plans to mitigate the impact of significant current and future increases in energy costs on businesses, consumers and the economy. The business group also conducted an energy survey for members to collect evidence on the expected impact of rising energy costs and disruption, to present to government. The new government has now announced that businesses in Great Britain and Northern Ireland will be supported with their energy bills through the Energy Bill Relief Scheme. This is a six-month scheme that will provide a discount on wholesale gas and electricity prices for all non-domestic customers whose current gas and electricity prices have been significantly inflated in light of global energy prices.
