The government has announced plans to replace the Apprenticeship Levy with a Growth and Skills Levy to improve skills training across the UK, with the goal to give businesses more flexibility to train their workforce and grow the business.
Logistics UK has been a leading advocate for this reform. Since the levy’s inception in 2017, the transport and logistics sector has contributed £825 million in levy funds but has faced structural barriers and restrictions that limited the recovery of just £250 million for workforce development.
As emphasised in Logistics UK's 2024 manifesto, addressing these inefficiencies has been critical to unlocking the sector’s potential to drive economic growth. Logistics UK continues to advocate for strategic investments in skills development, positioning logistics as foundational to the government’s identified highest potential growth-driving industries.
Ongoing dialogue with key government departments—including the Department for Transport, Department for Business and Trade, and Department for Work and Pensions—reinforces this commitment.
Furthermore, Logistics UK is pleased to announce its participation in its first roundtable with Skills England on Friday 6 December. Further updates on eligibility criteria and the implementation framework for the growth and skills levy are anticipated in the new year. Logistics UK remains steadfast in its mission to ensure the sector has the resources to attract, train, and retain talent essential to powering the UK economy.
