Logistics UK Policy Win - Launch of Access Charges Discount Policy

This summer, Network Rail launched its Access Charges Discount Policy, which is open to both passenger and freight operators. These discounts are intended to encourage the development of new services or the use of considerably under-utilised lines.

The charges will be waived in full for six months, while new flows are being established. To qualify for the discount policy, the flow needs to be new to rail traffic and evidence will be required to highlight that without this financial incentive, the new traffic will not materialise.

Logistics UK has continually been calling for support to help ensure the rail freight growth target is met and the lowering or removal of the track access charge for new rail freight flow is a key mechanism to deliver this change and therefore promote modal shift.

The business group will continue to call for incentives to enable efficient modal shift as a way to reduce emissions across the sector.
