Policy wins – November 2022

Wins recently achieved by Logistics UK's policy team.

TRADER SUPPORT SERVICE EXTENSION

The government has extended the Trader Support Service for another year, a service which was initially awarded funding for a two-year period only. Logistics UK has continually raised the importance of the Trader Support Service and how helpful it is for members during meetings with the government, as well as in media interviews. The Trader Support Service is a free to use service that helps traders and carriers with administration in moving goods from Great Britain to Northern Ireland under the terms of the Northern Ireland Protocol. Logistics UK emphasised that the Trader Support Service should be extended because the same burdens still apply as when the service first started, and it reduces the costs associated with the Northern Ireland Protocol as members do not have to pay for customs entries.

LOGISTICS UK HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF LOGISTICS AT PARTY CONFERENCES

Logistics UK attended both the Labour Party and Conservative Party conferences in recent weeks to listen to discussions on topical issues, engage with members of the parties and wider stakeholders, and highlight the importance of the logistics industry. Logistics UK attended over 15 fringe events on relevant issues and sought to ask questions of speakers on freight and logistics issues. At the Conservative Party conference, Logistics UK hosted a fringe event entitled Decarbonising logistics: Achieving net zero and economic growth that was well attended. Transport Minister Baroness Vere spoke on behalf of the government, championing the importance of the logistics industry and the need to utilise all transport modes. Kate Jennings, Director of Policy at Logistics UK and Justin Laney, Partner and General Manager at John Lewis, highlighted the importance of clarity and certainty for operators to invest. Following the conferences, Logistics UK will be following up with relevant MPs and stakeholders to continue engagement.
