Logistics UK Policy win: Applying for Direct Vision Standard grace period bulk applications

It was recently announced (20 September) that Transport for London (TfL) has developed a process for applying for the Direct Vision Standard (DVS) in bulk, following significant pressure from Logistics UK and others.

Changes are due to go live from 28 October 2024, meaning HGVs over 12 tonnes will need to hold at least a three-star rating or fit the Progressive Safe System (PSS) to operate in Greater London from this date. Operators are able to apply for a grace period before 28 October, if more time is needed, however, up until now the system was time consuming and inefficient for those registering multiple vehicles.

As of 1 October 2024, TfL will accept applications from operators making grace period applications for more than 100 vehicles. Operators will need to submit a grace period application enquiry, which should state that operators are making a bulk grace period application for more than 100 vehicles.

The business group has been calling for action to take place to streamline the process, given the application previously had to be done individually, requiring operators to spend significant time on the applications.

Logistics UK has continually raised concerns and engaged with all levels of seniority within TfL to call for this change to be introduced.
