Policy wins – June 2021
Wins recently achieved by Logistics UK's policy team.
Greater funding for LGV Driver Apprenticeship
The new LGV Driver Apprenticeship standard has received a higher funding band, confirmed at £7,000 rather than the proposed £6,000, after Logistics UK engaged directly with ministers and officials and utilised the media to press our (and other stakeholders') case for additional funding.
Increase in vocational driver licence testing
Logistics UK has been highlighting the backlogs in vocational testing and the resulting impacts on accessibility of driving as a profession; we pressed at ministerial level for these problems to be recognised and addressed, and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has now increased vocational licence testing to around double its weekly output (compared to pre-COVID levels).
Positive outcome for freight in Williams-Shapps Review
Following Logistics UK's response to the Williams Rail Review, as well as engagement with the Department for Transport, officials and regular meetings with stakeholders (including Network Rail), freight has achieved a positive outcome in the Williams-Shapps Review White Paper published 20 May 2021. Plans include a national freight coordination team for freight, fair access to rail network for freight, a statutory duty to promote rail freight, government growth targets for freight, research, development and innovation support, decarbonisation (electrification), and improved connectivity (ports and Freeports).
