Policy wins – December 2021

Wins recently achieved by Logistics UK's policy team

Inclusion of A75 in connectivity recommendations

Logistics UK has long campaigned for infrastructural improvements to be made to the A75, to make it safer and more reliable. After Logistics UK’s engagement with government, the Chair of the Union Connectivity Review (UCR) and the media, the UCR included sections of the A75 in its list of recommended infrastructure projects.

Phase-out dates for new, non-zero emission HGVs

Government’s announcement of the phase-out dates for new, non-zero emission HGVs largely aligned with Logistics UK’s position, which supported the phase-out dates of 2040 and 2035. Logistics UK agreed on a position with members and actively engaged with the government. Logistics UK was, however, disappointed that vehicles designed to be run on low carbon fuels can no longer be sold past these dates.

Transpennine Main Line improvements

The Integrated Rail Plan (IRP) was published in November, detailing changes to passenger rail and updates on the HS2. Logistics UK was pleased that the IRP included significant freight and gauge improvements to the Transpennine Main Line for intermodal traffic, which had been a consistent policy ask of government.

Information to hauliers on agri-food imports from the EU

After Logistics UK raised the issue at Parliamentary Select Committees and during industry group meetings with Defra, government has accepted Logistics UK’s request to involve us and our members in the development of systems to ensure that international HGV drivers have made agri-food declarations for journeys from the EU to GB correctly.

Driver CPC review

Logistics UK raised concerns over the Driver CPC and encouraged its review, as the post-Brexit era may bring new opportunities for development and improvement. The government responded by announcing a review of Driver CPC in GB to reconsider its scope, delivery, processes and quality control.
