The MAC shines a light on DVLA's new ‘Share driving licence function’

By Becky Martin, Senior Transport Advisor, Logistics UK.

The UK’s Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has recently enhanced its online Driver and Vehicles account by introducing a “Share Driving Licence” function.

This feature allows licence holders to easily share their driving records online, simplifying tasks such as proving driver eligibility for employers or rental services.

Here’s a breakdown of the DVLA’s online account and how this new functionality is set to benefit drivers across the UK.

Overview of the DVLA Driver and Vehicles Account

The DVLA’s online account provides drivers in the UK with a secure platform to access and manage essential information related to their driving licence and vehicle records.

Some of the main features include checking licence status, viewing vehicle tax and MOT details, updating personal information, and applying for licence renewals or replacements.

The account consolidates these services, providing users with a convenient, one-stop portal to manage their records.

The “Share Driving Licence” Function

The new “Share Driving Licence” function addresses a common need among drivers who may need to verify their driving credentials for various purposes. Whether renting a car, applying for a job that requires driving, or any situation where proof of eligibility and driving history is necessary, this feature is designed to streamline the process.

With this function, drivers can generate a unique code that grants temporary access to their licence information. This code can be shared with employers, rental agencies, or any organisation that requires verification.

The recipient of the code can use it to view the driver’s licence details, including their eligibility, any penalties or points, and other relevant data. Importantly, the code is time-limited, usually expiring after 21 days, which helps ensure that the driver’s data remains secure.

Key Benefits of sharing driving licence

1. Security and privacy: By using a unique, temporary code, drivers retain control over who has access to their information and for how long, reducing the risk of data misuse.

2. Convenience: Instead of sending physical documents or waiting for administrative verification, drivers can instantly grant access to their licence information online, making processes faster and less reliant on paperwork.

Conclusion

The DVLA’s Share Driving Licence function marks a significant step forward in modernising how UK drivers manage and share their information. This addition complements the DVLA’s existing suite of online services, providing a user-friendly, secure, and practical solution to common verification needs.

For many drivers and businesses, the feature promises to save time, reduce paperwork, and make verifying driving credentials as simple as sharing a code.
