Ask the MAC – October 2021

Read answers to questions put to Logistics UK's Member Advice Centre.

Q) We have got a driver who has just received their photocard driving licence back from DVLA after applying for a provisional LGV licence, but I can’t see any provisional entitlement on it, is this correct?

A) With the abolition of the counterpart driving licence, the provisional entitlement will not show up on a photocard licence. The only way to check the driver has provisional entitlement is to go to the checking service on the GOV website to see what vehicles the driver is entitled to drive.

Q) Can drivers carry out minor repairs to our vehicles such as headlight/indicator bulb replacement, wing mirror glass replacement, etc.

A) Minor repairs to vehicles such as replacing wing mirror glass, and headlight/indicator bulb replacements can be carried out by a driver and not a qualified mechanic, as long as the driver has had adequate training, and this can be evidenced through their employee records.

You should still use the normal defect reporting and rectification procedure even if they are carried out by a driver.
