A. A caravan towed behind a tractor unit would be classed as a trailer. If the caravan weighs over 750kg, a C+E licence entitlement would be required to tow it behind a tractor unit. If the caravan’s maximum authorised mass did not exceed 750kg, a category C entitlement would be appropriate, because holders can tow trailers up to this weight with their category C entitlement.
Get the show on the road
Q. We are thinking of displaying one of our articulated solo tractor units without a trailer at a truck show, would the driver require a Driver CPC qualification?
A. The driver may be exempt under the exemption ‘Vehicles used for the non-commercial carriage of passengers or goods’, although this depends on various factors.
DVSA defines non-commercial carriage as ‘any carriage by road, other than carriage for hire or reward or on own account, for which no direct or indirect remuneration is received and which does not directly or indirectly generate any income for the driver of the vehicle or for others and which is not linked to professional or commercial activity’.
However, if the journey does not meet the above definition of non-commercial, then Driver CPC would be required.
