Dangerous goods in transit - how to prevent major incidents
News reports last week describe how an explosion on a container ship containing dangerous goods, moored at Ningbo Zhoushan Port in China's eastern Zhejiang province, rocked the port.
Thankfully, there were no casualties, but this shows the importance of ensuring that all dangerous goods are packed and stored correctly for transportation.
If you follow some basic rules when carrying any dangerous or hazardous products then you can prevent accidents from happening:
• Secure the items for carriage.
• Do not load leaking or damaged items.
• Gas bottles/liquids are to be stored in the upright position.
• Can products be loaded together, or have they got to be segregated? i.e. bleach and some disinfectants could mix if damaged and would produce a vapour that is hazardous to breathing.
• Store transport and store goods according to the applicable dangerous goods regulations (also refer to the Material Safety Data Notes) (MSDN) that come with the products..
In all cases, if you are unsure then Logistics UK has a team of Dangerous Goods Safety Advisors (DGSA) that can help with any of your dangerous goods queries.
The MAC have produced several briefing notes and fact sheets covering dangerous goods which can be found by clicking on the links.
